A JOURNEY BY HISTORIC TRAIN TO DISCOVER AND SAVOR SICILY IN THE NAME OF A NEW PHILOSOPHY OF TRAVEL AND “SLOW” TOURISM
The FS Italiane Foundation and the Sicilian Region have put a rich program of historical and tourist trains on the tracks that will cover the most suggestive and panoramic railway lines of the region. The proposal marks a further step forward in the work of enhancing the Sicilian tourist lines and the historical and landscape beauties of the region.
History, archeology and nature will form, from time to time, the scenes of a constantly changing scenario: from the marvelous Baroque Railway, Syracuse – Ragusa, dotted with historical centers such as Modica, Noto, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla, to the coastlines, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian, which will lead the traveler along routes that include the most important centers of Sicilian history and culture: Taormina, Catania, Cefalù, Palermo and Messina.
Finally, when speaking of Sicily, one cannot refer to the richness of the archaeological heritage, one of the most important in the world. Also in this case the tracks of the FS Italiane Foundation and its trains will allow millennial-flavored trips to lovers of the archaeological heritage of Sicily Greek. It will thus be possible to travel along the historical Agrigento – Porto Empedocle line, with direct access to the wonderful archaeological park of Akragas; go from Palermo to Segesta, famous for its Greek temple of the fifth century. B.C.; visit the Roman villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina, with the famous Roman mosaics of the 4th century. d.C., and the archaeological area of Morgantina, near Aidone, which preserves important remains of the ancient Greek city of the III-IV century. a.C .. For lovers of the island’s railway history it will also be an idel journey in the memory of the suppressed narrow-gauge line that once united Dittaino, Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone, the line of sulfur miners, active from 1912 to 1972.
One of the most important innovations will be the combination of the historic train with the island’s gastronomy . The travelers of this program of historical and tourist trains will be able, in fact, to taste both on board the train and on the ground, many dishes and delicacies of Sicilian cuisine participating in festivals, cultural events and food and wine events organized in various municipalities crossed by railway lines and trains of the Italian FS Foundation.
Many, then the ingredients and points of interest of this program developed by the FS Italiane Foundation and the Sicily region; all in the name of a new philosophy of travel and “slow” tourism, which leaves speed and haste at home to focus on the quality and detail of our immense historical and natural heritage.
